Sacristan

In parish life, the role of the Sacristan is often unseen, yet it plays a vital part in helping priests focus on their ministerial duties. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal states that the Sacristan "carefully arranges the liturgical books, the vestments, and other necessary items for the celebration of the Mass" (No. 105). 

The Sacristy is a secure area where sacred items for the Holy Mass are stored and where clergy prepare for service. Sacristans arrive about thirty minutes before Mass and handle their tasks prayerfully, keeping the space neat and meditative. They ensure that the priest has all necessary items, including chalices, linens, candles, and liturgical books, all maintained in pristine condition. The Sacristan also checks that candles have enough oil and prepares fresh hosts and the proper amount of wine for communion.

After Mass, the Sacristan clears the altar, extinguishes candles, cleans the area, and stores all sacred items.
